I have a few favorite books that also happen to be terrific books for Halloween reading.
Scary books!
But the fun, old fashioned kind of scary, not the yucky blood & gore stuff that's passing itself off as scary these days.
I just LOVE these books!
and the "Georgetown Trio" by the incomparable Barbara Michaels:
In the spirit of Halloween, what are your favorite scary books?

Rebecca! And "The Omen'.
And The Fall of the House of Usher. I've not read Barbara Michaels--I'll have to pick up one of these!
I've read five of those, and they're scary, all right. The Shirley Jackson is a top favorite of mine, as is the first movie made from it. I think 'Salem's Lot might top my list.
Love those Barbara Michaels - wish she'd write more (I'm not a fan of the Egyptian stuff). I remember being scared by The Exorcist (the book) and M. R. James's ghost stories. Phil Rickman's Merrily Watkins books are somewhat scary, but his standalones are even more so.
HARVEST HOME by Thomas Tryon and SOMETHING WICKED THIS WAY COMES by Ray Bradbury!
These all sound great. The only one of these I've read is Stuart Woods' Under the Lake and loved it.

Thoughts in Progress
Love the cover art on that first one! Also a big Edgar Allan Poe fan. I agree with Sarah-The Fall of the House of Usher.
I greatly enjoyed the P.J. Bracegirdle book I read recently, "Haunted Asylum," part of the Joy of Spooking series.
The Sherlock Holmes short story, "The Speckled Band," stayed with me a long time when I first read it as a child.
